Wallace and Gromit and Oscar

Hurrah for Aardman Animation: Wallace and Gromit - Curse of the Were Rabbit walked off with fresh Oscar glory last night at the Academy Awards as they took the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It was a pretty good year for traditional methods of animation as the other contenders in that category were the also excellent Corpse Bride and Howl's Moving Castle; delighted as I am to see Wallace and Gromit winning I'm glad I didn't have to choose between those three. Much as I love CGI animation like the Incredibles there is still something magical about more traditional forms of animation (which is perhaps why I have been drooling over this book on the great Ray Harryhausen lately) .

Alas the Scottish newcomer and former Glasgow School of Art student Sharon Colman missed out on an Oscar for the Best Animated Short Film for her hand-drawn film Badgered, although she said in the Herald yesterday that just being nominated had opened doors for her, allowing her to meet people like John Lasseter of Pixar. The Oscar went to The Moon and the Son: an Imagined Converstation.

Other fantastic genre movie winners included King Kong for best Visual Effects (which I still find odd since there were clearly sections that hadn't been finished) with Kong also picking up statues for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing while Narnia won for best Make-up.
