About Time

We’ve just got in some rather spiffing new Doctor Who titles from the wonderfully-monikered Mad Norwegian Press. They have a growing range of factual companions entitled About Time which go into the long-running series in great detail and are co-authored by Tat Wood and Lawrence Miles (who was behind the unofficial Buffy companion Dusted, which was pretty popular).

They’ve been picking up some good reviews so we’re pleased to present the Gallifrey-minded among you with the first three releases. Perhaps confusingly the first three releases are not the first three volumes but actually volumes three, four and five! Yes, the Mad Norwegians are releasing the seasonal guides out of sequence, which is pretty appropriate for a book about a Time Lord if you think about it.

Volume three covers the Pertwee era, 1970-1974, seasons seven to eleven. Volume four takes us through the bulk of the revered Tom Baker’s long reign (no wonder SFX readers voted him Top Doc), 1975-1979, seasons twelve through seventeen. Volume five takes us through 1980–1984, seasons eighteen to twenty one and includes the end of the Baker era (just the thing for folk who like dangling off huge radio telescopes), the entire Peter Davidson era (anyone for cricket? My goodness, Tegan, what a fetching leather skirt you have!) and the start of the Colin Baker era (ah, yes, that coat).

The About Time series looks like shaping up into a splendid reference library for all Doctor Who fans and gives both old hands something to bite into and newbies a chance to learn the history and mythology of Britain’s favourite SF show before the eagerly anticipated new series begins this month.
