The Will Eisner Library

DC have embarked on a project which is putting all the 'modern' books by Will Eisner back into print. Today Eisner is the 'grand old man' of comics. He is credited with creating the shorthand that has become the modern comic, with strips like 'The Spirit' and others produced by his studio of writers and artists in the pre WWII years and beyond.

He was also an excellent artist in his own right and latterly went on to produce what is more or less universally felt to be the first 'Graphic Novel' in 'A contract with God'. Since then he has produced many and varied works - the best of them (IMO) which stick to themes dealing with the New York Jewish upbringing he himself was part of.

Eisner is lauded these days on all sides but these books whilst always interesting should be approached with some caution for most comics readers who may find some of the material a little oversentimentalized and slowmoving.Sadly Eisner passed away at the beginning of 2005 but he leaves behind a legacy which includes not only his own extensive work but his incalculable influence on all comic writers and artists.
