Staff Picks One

Welcome to the first entry in our Staff Picks series. This is where our staff will share with you some of the best - and often more unusual - titles which we've come across. These three titles represent a few of the forthcoming titles that really caught our attention recently.

Blacksad Volume 3 - the Sketch Files

Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido make a very welcome return with their frankly fabulous Blacksad series. John Blacksad may be a humanised cat, but that doesn't mean this series is a children's picture book! This third volume, the Sketch Files, takes readers behind the scenes and shows how such a work is put together.

Senses -Sequential Art Anthology

We all know how tough it can be for writers and artists to break into the comics industry. Here one of the finest indie presses, Top Shelf, are doing their bit to nurture new talent with Senses, an anthology of material from students, staff and alumni of the well-respected SCAD - the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Without such support and encouragement we won't see as many innovative new writers and artists in our beloved genre, so we think this sterling effort by SCAD and Top Shelf deserves the support and attention of discerning comics buyers. And who knows? Perhaps you may read the early work of someone who goes on to be the next Warren Ellis or Neil Gaiman?

The Sketchbook Adventures

Peter Poplaski has been around; you may not instantly recognise the name, but you have almost certainly seen his artwork since he has worked throughout the industry, from creating covers for Superman to working in design with the great Will Eisner.

Robert and Aline Crumb are both close friends and fans (not to mention near-neighbours) of Pete and this collection of his artwork and observations of life and people (much of it in the small French town he now lives in near the Crumbs) will appeal to readers who enjoy the more unusual angle on comics. And we're always pleased to see a new book emerge from Denis Kitchen's company.
