Two legends in their own right, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, came together to create many of the most beloved comics characters and stories of all time. In 1961 with The Fantastic Four #1 they excelled even themselves in the creation of this, the First Family of Superheroes.
Their leader, Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards) - a super-stretching genius; Susan Richards (Susan Storm before she marries Reed) is the Invisible Woman and a master of force-fields; Johnny Storm is the flying Human Torch and, of course, Ben Grimm is the incredibly powerful Thing.
Over the last four decades they have fought super-villains, mighty alien warlords (including the feared Galactus) and even each other. They've been heroes to the city but also at times, like Spider-Man, been reviled and shunned too. They've been to space and even the Hereafter, but they have always been a family - perhaps one of the reasons for their enduring popularity is that, like Peter Parker, we can see the human beings behind the heroes, people we can empathise with.
