The Sandman and Neil Gaiman - if this is new to you it may seem intimidating. When it began it was little known, but word-of-mouth soon spread. Now it may seem daunting to a newcomer after all of the recommendations and awards - not to mention eight year's worth of interwoven tales.
Well don't let it put you off - this is one of the most remarkable works in comics. Ostensibly telling the tale of Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, many of the tales actually follow a multitude of other, fascinating characters, from an Elizabethan solider to ancient gods, from brave cats to NYC transexuals and even Will Shakespeare, with Dream only a secondary character.
We cross realities, the Dreaming, Faerie, Hell and the Waking World - our world's folklore, myth and literature are woven into the fabric of the tale. The ideas come so often and are so well executed you will need to go back and re-read all of these tales again and again. In fact I do re-read all of these tales regularly and always find something new in them - always the mark of good writing. Literary, mature, funny, sad, touching, elegant - simply one of the finest series ever. |
