| Here it is, the first in a wonderful hardback series of reprints collecting together the glory that was Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future. Giving a warm, colourful glow to post-war, Austerity-era Britain in the early 50s this drips with style - the graphics, the designs, the characters are all wonderful.
This is utterly classic British comics history - a time when heroes were simpler, not some post-modern, complicated character with 'issues'. There are even nods to sexual equality in the shape of Professor Peabody, the smartest of the bunch and a lady who can also handle a rocket ship and a raygun when she needs to as our chums travel to Venus to see if they can grow new crops to feed a hungry world, but encounter instead the Treens and their evil master, the Mekon.
The warm glow of nostalgia permeates this, even, paradoxically, for those of us too young to remember it first time round; it will appeal to the dads who read the Eagle every week in their childhood and it will appeal to younger readers too. These new Dares come with introductions to the characters, creators and histories - a perfect introduction to one of the best British comics characters and one who inspired so many later comics creators.
