Charley's War: 1 August-17 October 1916

The second hardback collection of this ground-breaking, classic British series. At a time when most comic books in Britain tended to treat war as something of a Boy's Own adventure, Pat Mills, one of UK comicdom's most respected writers, took a different path.

Mills took us on a journey which started jingoistically with young Charley signing up to fight for King and Country only to watch his illusions - and those of a lost generation - be stripped away by the mud, blood and carnage of trench fighting in the War to End All Wars.

This is the comic equivalent to the Great War poem of that era by Wilfred Owen, Dulce Et Decorum Est; like Owen's tragic verse it fights the lie about warfare being about adventure and glory.
