| Asterix the Gaul | |
"The year is 50BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium..."
The adventures of our plucky Gaulish heroes, the diminutive Asterix and the huge Obelix began as a serialisation way back in 1959 in the pages of Pilote, with the first book collecting their adventures, Astérix le Gaulois, appearing in 1961.
Since that point Asterix has gone on to conquer more lands than the Romans who invaded his homeland could have dreamed of, being translated into more than 100 languages, from Afrikaans to Vietnamese and crossing the world from Arabia to Britain and across the Great Divide. Generations of kids have loved them and the fact that as adults we still take pleasure from them illustrates just how well-written and drawn they were.
Goscinny passed away in 1977, although Uderzo continued for years afterwards, producing new adventures for the Gauls. Still massively popular with children and adults the major international publishing house, Orion, has now brought out these new editions, with the art cleaned up and fresh for new - and old - generations to love.
